OLABOLA - A Movie Not Just About Football But Differences and Unity

This morning I went to Berjaya Time Square GSC Maxx for OLABOLA Special Media Screening courtesy of Astro. The traffic jam was really bad but I am glad I make it on time. With the success of the movie 《一路有你 The Journey》, I did put high expectation for OlaBola movie this time. Let's watch the movie trailer first to have an idea of the story line??

OLABOLA - Official Trailer 28 January 2016

Olabola Synopsis
"Marianne, a young professional, is disillusioned with her working life in Malaysia. Feeling she has had enough, she prepares to leave for England‘s greener pastures. But her one final assignment leads her to discover a story so amazing, it literally changes her life.

It is a story set in the 1980s during tumultuous economic times, about an unlikely team of footballers whose disagreements have left them with a streak of embarrassing losses. Personal issues have caused each of them to crack under pressure while the team slowly falls apart. They have only one chance left for international glory, and this multicultural team has to find it in their hearts to overcome their individual odds and unite for the sake of an entire country. But unknown to them, their greatest test is yet to come, one that will make or break their fighting spirit and the nation’s hopes and aspirations.

At once a powerful lesson from the past and a hopeful missive for the future, OlaBola, a fictional tale based on true events, invites us to celebrate our differences and unite as a nation with a collective goal. This poignant zero-to-hero story reminds us that there is beauty in our diversity and strength in our unity. And like Marianne, we might just find our reason to persevere and fight for our dreams here within this beautiful country called Malaysia."

OlaBola Movie Review:
Since I can't reveal the story line (duh) I shall just comment about the acting skill and production base on my personal opinion ya. There are a few outstanding actors that I would thumbs up for them, Muthu (Saran Kumar), Ong Tiam Cai (Lim Jian Wen), Rahman (Bront Palarae) and Chow Mei Ling (Daphne Low). I personally think that their acting and character in the movie are very outstanding and you can easily remember them. I like the emotional talk by Muthu, humor by Tiam Cai (Ah Cai), talented and funny commentator Rahman that will surely make you laugh, the cold sister Mei Ling who deep inside support what her brother Kwok Keong is doing although she had sacrificed a lot for the family.

Throughout the shooting, I believe many cast members got injured during the intense football match scene and I salute you guys who continue shooting it although you were injured. That's the spirit as a team and chasing your dream as well.

Production wise I really love the aerial scenery shots that they shot using the drone, can't believe that Broga Hill can be that beautiful and if got chance I definitely want to try out the train ride in Sabah, seems so nostalgic to me. (The train ride is in Sabah between Beaufort and Tenom.)

OlaBola is Malaysia's first feature film that use the immersive Dolby Atmos sound technology that gives audiences optimal surround-sound quality. It was so good that I mistaken noise in the movie came from the crowd in the cinema, which it wasn't. The football and slow motion scenes were nicely captured consider that you can't fix the direction of the football. Talking about OlaBola's CGI and visual-effects (VFX),  it manage to make Stadium Merdeka looks really crowded and the helicopter looks so real that I can't figure it was fake at first place.

Oh ya, the carnival scene with a Ferris wheel, a carousel and game stalls, I can see big amount of time and efforts in creating this back to 80's scene and yet need to be dismantled after 4 days of filming. Love the details that they put into it.

Knowing Marianne Tan through YouTube videos, I was hoping to see more of her acting scene in the movie. I guess Director Chiu found the right person who can speak fluent English than Chinese and she was natural speaking Chinese with the 'banana' slang haha. I still wonder how Director Chiu made Marianne cried like waterfall near the end of the movie. It was quite emotional.

Eric Teng as Eric Yong
Oh ya, one funny thing that I would like to share with you guys, I can't recognize Eric Yong (Eric Teng) during the OlaBola media screening because of the long hair and that-moustache-that-not-all chinese-could-have. So I've come to a conclusion, guys don't simply keep a long hair and moustache kay? It doesn't suit everyone hahaha. It can makes you look 20 years older with that moustache.

In conclusion, OlaBola is not just a movie about football, but also to celebrate our differences and unite as a nation with a collective goal. It's a movie about unity and get stronger together.
