Photo Face-Off with Justin Mott and Christy Yeoh on HISTORY Channel

I've been in love with photography for many years and always wonder what if photography challenge/marathon was being brought up to the TV Screen. Finally something awesome coming up on HISTORY Channel, it is called "The Photo Face-Off". "The Photo Face-Off" is an original series for HISTORY to showcase the unique cultures and diversity in Asia and you can witness five photographers from different continent take the challenge to PK with Justin Mott, a very active and talkative professional photographer that I've met during the Press Conference. Singyuin Christy Yeoh, participant from Malaysia is a kinda quiet girl but her image speak thousand words too. I can't wait to watch these TV Series on History Channel and hopefully I can learn a few tips throughout this show. Who know's one day I might be in Photo Face-Off Season 2? Haha!! Check out some photos below where Justin Mott and Singyuin Christy Yeoh were given an instant 10 minutes photography challenge - "Malaysia Boleh". Let's see who won the challenge shall we?
In Episode two, Christy and Justin were given time to capture photo of chickens
"Five photographers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are competing for the assignment of a lifetime - an all expenses paid trip to New York City to photograph some of the world's biggest stars and a trip to the Canon Photo Clinic in Japan.
To prove their worth, they must pass the screening process from hell - a three-round battle with photography fiend Justin Mott to show how far they will go to get the perfect shot.
This is photography as you've never seen it before. This is Photo Face-Off!"
Jeremy Teo, Justin Mott and Christy Yeoh
If compare Justin Mott with Christy Yeoh, they are two different person where Justin is more outgoing and good at social with strangers. You will able to see how he interact with people in the Photo Face-Off without knowing their local language. All Justin used was mainly body language accompanied with simple English!! As for Christy, she is more gentle and quiet, typical Malaysian haha. I wish I can acquire Justin's extrovert character because it is very important skill to interact with people around you if you wanna take a good photo. After all, you wanna take a photo that can tell a story, not papparazi type of photo that celebrities hate.

Justin Mott ready for the 10 minutes photography challenge!

Two Canon DSLR ready for Christy and Justin!!

Rebecca Saw was the first model for Justin Mott =)

I was impressed with Justin Mott's skill at interact with people and try to create a photo that's close to the heart and happy

In the end Christy Yeoh won the photography challenge with helps of media friend. Picking the lucky winner who voted for her photo

Photo Face-Off  now on HISTORY Channel - Every Tuesday , 10.30pm

8 Photography Tips from Justin Mott

1. Be Patient
The best photographers are patient photographers. Find your light and your background and just sit and wait for something to happen in that light. The wait can be painstaking but a great photo lasts a lifetime.

2. Give Yourself Homework
Give yourself weekend assignments, practice makes perfect. A few examples; photograph just the color red, limit yourself to just one particular shape like circles, or pick a feeling like love. Mix it up all the time with your assignments so you don’t get bored.

3. Light is Key
Interesting light makes for interesting pictures. First you need to understand and recognize gorgeous light in every day life, then you need to learn how to creatively expose for that light.

4. Shoot on Manual
If you are shooting on automatic or aperture priority you are doing yourself and your growth as a photographer a disservice. Shooting in Manual mode on whatever camera you have opens up a world of creative exposure options that aren’t available using your camera on automatic.

5. Break the Rules
Take the rule of thirds and other cliché photography rules and throw them in your trash bin. Everyone is a photographer these days, so if you want your work to stand out make your own rules, don’t be like everyone else.

6. No Place Like Home
Many people think the only way to get a great picture is to travel to exotic locations. That couldn’t be further from the truth, great pictures are just outside your door. Take an hour after work, which is typically right around sunset for most people and explore your neighborhood. Trust me, you will learn new things about your surroundings and you will get amazing pictures.

7. Don’t Be Lazy
When you see something you like, don’t simply stop, take your camera out and shoot it. Move around a bit, put some thought into what you want to say with this image. Find an interesting angle; look for something interesting to shoot through. Get up high and get low too - perspective is what separates the novice from the pro. Don’t be afraid to lie on the ground and shoot from the floor. When people walk by and think “What is that guy doing?” is often when I'm getting my best pictures.

8. Learn How To Tell A Story
One picture can tell a story or you can use a series of pictures. Craft your art of storytelling and you will become a better all around photographer.

Photo Face-Off will premiere on HISTORY Channel (Ch 555 and 575) starting 23 Sep 2014 and continue every Tuesday 10.30pm. All right I am gonna watch it now. *click*
