Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses After 6 Months: Pros, Cons & Final Verdict

After using the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses for six months, I’ve gathered valuable insights into both the advantages and drawbacks of this innovative tech accessory. As a photographer, I found the glasses to be incredibly useful for capturing POV (point-of-view) footage, offering a hands-free experience that lets you focus on the moment. The ability to shoot from your natural perspective adds a unique touch to your content, especially if you're into vlogging, street photography, or just recording life's everyday moments. However, if you’re shooting at indoor events, the brown-tinted lenses, which are designed for outdoor use as sunglasses, can limit visibility and affect photo quality. To get around this, I recommend customizing your frames and lenses. You can switch out the lenses to suit your needs, and it’s a great way to save money if you're thinking of investing in these smart glasses.

A notable improvement in the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses is their ability to record videos for up to three minutes—a significant upgrade from the original one-minute limit. For photographers or content creators like myself, this feature is extremely useful, especially for candid street photography or when I approach strangers for my #mybeautifulstrangers project. However, one major con is the short battery life. If you’re frequently recording videos, the glasses only last between one to two hours before needing a 45-minute recharge. This can be a dealbreaker for anyone planning to use these smart glasses for extended shoots, such as event photography or vlogs.

One of the most exciting features is the integration of Meta AI. This allows users to interact with the smart glasses through voice commands, asking questions or identifying objects. For instance, I’ve asked it to identify objects on my treadmill display or give updates on the latest Olympic medal counts. While impressive, this feature is currently limited to users in the U.S. and U.K., which may be frustrating for international buyers.

When it comes to privacy concerns, some people worry about being recorded without noticing. The glasses have a small LED light that signals when they’re recording, but in my experience, most people don’t realize it’s on unless they’ve watched a video about these glasses. This could be a concern for those who prefer not to be on camera.

While the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses offer many cutting-edge features, they come with a high price tag of $300 or more. For casual users, this might be a significant investment. Additionally, the glasses can feel a bit heavy, especially if you’re adding prescription or polarized lenses. Frequent users will need to deal with overheating issues during charging and data transfers, which may disrupt your workflow if you're shooting for extended periods.

Despite these drawbacks, the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses offer immense value for content creators who want to capture spontaneous moments hands-free. They’re perfect for busy parents who need both hands free, or for photographers who want to shoot quickly without fumbling for their phones. The instant sharing feature, where you can upload photos directly to Instagram or other social platforms via voice command, is another bonus that adds convenience for those looking to create and share content seamlessly.

If you're a frequent traveler, vlogger, or someone who creates visual content regularly, these glasses could be a game-changer. However, given their price and the limitations in battery life and overheating, they may not be ideal for everyone. For those still interested, it’s best to ask a friend in the U.S. or U.K. to purchase these for you, as availability outside these regions is limited. With time, we hope to see improvements in their functionality and availability in other countries like Malaysia.
